The impact that disorders of sexual differentiation have on individuals will depend in part on the age of that person at diagnosis. The developmental stage of the child or adolescent will affect his or her ability to understand and cope with such a diagnosis. Likewise, the ability to cooperate with medical care and comply with treatment regimens will depend in part on the level of maturity. In the following sections, the impact of sexual differentiation disorders will be viewed from the vantage point of developmental phases.
