Before the era of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Kaposi sarcoma occurred among elderly men, usually on the extremities. Currently most patients with Kaposi sarcoma are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus and have AIDS. Dark-brown nodules appear on the skin or mucosa. The histologic appearance is a capsule surrounding spindle cells with prominent nuclei. Treatment is excision or laser ablation.
