Most instances of recurrent sinusitis are associated with obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex from varying causes, including mucosal edema due to allergy. Chronic hyperplastic rhinosinusitis can be caused by repeated allergic reactions involving these target organs. A contributory allergic condition must be considered in cases of recurrent or chronic sinus disease and of surgery after a failed trial of medical management. Appropriate immunotherapy started before surgery and continued afterward enhances end results.
