The maxilla is the chief component of the upper jaw. In addition to housing the dental apparatus and the maxillary sinus, it is related posteriorly to the medial and lateral pterygoid plates. The hard palate unites the paired maxilla and forms the bony roof of the oral cavity. Sensation to the upper teeth is provided by the maxillary nerve through the posterior superior and anterior superior alveolar nerves. The infraorbital nerve, another branch of V2, provides sensation over the face of the maxilla and soft tissues.
